TAKE ACTION NOW TO HELP PREVENT ALGAE BLOOMS(RED TIDE)

With your support, your local elected officials have passed strong urban fertilizer management standards during the past year in your communities of St. Petersburg, Gulfport, and Pinellas County.  The goal is to reduce the nitrogen & phosphorus nutrient pollution that has helped feed harmful algae blooms in our Florida waterways, including Red Tide in the Gulf.  Hillsborough County is poised to take the same action to help PREVENT harmful algae blooms.  However, the steps forward are in serious jeopardy! How?

Bill (SB 382) would force localities to wait until water is already polluted by nutrients before they can set standards to help protect it.  Thus, all the hard work set in place from Lee to Pinellas county would be washed down the drain.  You can make a difference by TAKING ACTION!

Call State Senate President Jeff Atwater(850)487-5100.  Respectfully let him know SB 382 should not be considered since prevention more cost effective than clean up.    More than likely you will not be able to talk to Senate President Atwater personally, but you will be able to leave a message – please do so as your call counts!  If you don’t have time to call, please send an email:  atwater.jeff.web@flsenate.gov

To find your Senator go here http://www.flsenate.gov/Legislators/index.cfm?Mode=District%20Information&Submenu=2&Tab=legislators it will only take a minute to find your elected official and tell them you are against SB 382 as well.

Please let us know that you’ve Taken Action to help keep our local waters clean by emailing suncoast@surfrider.org and informing us you called and or emailed you elected official.  The greater coalition is keeping a tally.

Thank you, once again, for taking time to help protect Florida’s waterways for one and all!

Tell Obama You Oppose Offshore Oil Drilling

President Obama just recently announced a significant expansion of offshore drilling and exploration. Offshore drilling not only places our environment at risk, it threatens the livelihood of millions of Americans who rely on clean, healthy, oil-free oceans and beaches to support fishing, tourism and other industries.

Act now and remind President Obama of his campaign promise to protect our coasts from offshore drilling.

Take a moment to send a clear message to the President that our coasts deserve protection and that offshore drilling is not the answer.

Upham Campaign and How You Can Help

The chapter is currently in the middle of researching solutions to propose to DEP and the Pinellas County government.  Because we do not want to just whine that our break is missing, our goal is to show how a win-win scenario can be created for all.

What is needed:

Person(s) willing to compile research on identified solutions

Person(s) willing to write-up in report format research found on solutions

Additionally, the chapter would like to create an ongoing photo journal of Upham beginning pre-groins in 2004.

What is needed:

Photograph submissions in electronic form.

Person to collect and catalog in chronological order all submissions on hand and be a resource for submission
