Be sure to join us for our monthly Chapter meeting this Thursday, July 10th. We will meet at 7:00 at Ferg’s Sports Bar and Grill located downtown at 1320 Central Ave. near the Trop. Ferg’s is family-friendly and has great food and beverages at reasonable prices.
Items on the agenda include election of new board members, the latest information regarding Upham Beach, our new Sunset Beach surfcam advertising plans and upcoming events.
There’s a lot to be done and as an all-volunteer organization we need YOUR help to protect our breaks, beaches and surf so come out, meet some old friends and make some new ones!
Don’t come alone, bring a friend!
If you haven’t seen the cam yet go to: www.sunsetbeachflsurfcam.com to check it out!
In cooperation with the Suncoast Surf Shop, the Suncoast Chapter of Surfrider has installed a really cool Surf Cam on Sunset Beach! We are very excited that we can check out the swell from near or far! Anyone interested in advertising on the site please contact us at email@example.com! Surf Cam Website
The Cocoa Beach Surf Museum and RonJon’s Surf Shop is sponsoring the 15th Annual Waterman’s Challenge in Cocoa Beach June 6-8 in Cocoa Beach. Once again there will be a Surfrider Smackdown between the Florida Chapters on Saturday the 7th and we need a team of up to six stoked surfers who want to do our Chapter proud. Two years ago we placed second but slipped to fifth last year so we are asking all concerned competitors to step up!
You must be a current paid Chapter member to participate. If you aren’t there’s plenty of time to contact us or go to suncoast.surfrider.org and join. Make sure you check the Suncoast Chapter box for your chapter affiliation!
The Chapter will pay the entry fee and contestants pay for lodging which we can share. We will drive over Friday night as heats start at 8:00-8:30 Saturday. We will return at the end of the day but you are welcome to stay overnight. This is an open format with no age or board categories and you surf as many waves as you can on which you will be judged. The payoff? Bragging rights for the next twelve months. This is a fun event with a lot of great competition. Here’s a description of the event from the Surf Museum:
Many thanks to all of the volunteers that helped to clean the beach & take a stand against big oil by joining hands! It was an amazing example of our community coming together & we look forward to continuing to support clean energy initiatives for the protection of our beaches, oceans & waves!
TAKE ACTION BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE.
The Surfrider Foundation released the following statement following BOEM’s announcement:
“Seismic airgun testing would cause catastrophic impacts to the marine ecosystem, including potential injury or death to hundreds of thousands of whales and dolphins. It would also set the stage for offshore drilling off the Atlantic coast, a dirty and dangerous practice that threatens the health of our oceans and coastal communities. On behalf of more than 250,000 Surfrider Foundation members and supporters, including over 25 local chapters from Maine to Florida who have vigorously opposed the proposal, we call upon the Obama Administration to cancel plans for seismic testing in the Atlantic ocean.”
